I need the AP Chemistry-New-API online professional development opportunity. I will be teaching this course for the first time; I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to learn at the PD and the review materials.
As the only Chemistry teacher at my high school who teaches about 200 students, I find that the lack of resources available can make Chemistry difficult to teach and learn. However, as adaptive learners, the show continues and I continue to teach and my students continue to learn. I lead through example and demonstrate the importance of resiliency, work ethic, and love of continuous learning.
My students are passionate, full of personality, and have tremendous potential.
Our school has tremendous school spirit and pride in their football team, band, and other extracurricular activities. Despite their lack of monetary resources they are able to be the best on the field. We have sent around 25 football players to play professional football. That same energy and potential can be applied to the classroom and beyond with the allocation of resources.
Now more than ever before it is imperative that I equip myself for my students. I will be teaching AP Chemistry for the first time this Fall; I need to review and fully understand the scientific material before I can teach it to my students. Prior to COVID-19, I was certain that I could attend a professional development opportunity and prepare myself to best assist my students so that they could catch up and be competitive as they apply to college. The reality is that they are competing, for admission at institutions, with students who have a plethora of resources, better-equipped teachers and less societal hurdles to surpass. Prior to COVID-19, my students were behind but not as much as they will be once schools open up again.
The reality is that the academic preparedness, to adapt to the college rigor, will be more unequal between my students and students living in more affluent zones post the pandemic.
COVID-19 has unveiled and exasperated preexisting societal issues, such as educational inequity. The pandemic has touched everyone's lives in distinct ways. As an educator, who works in the heart of Liberty City, Miami, I think about how my students' lives are being affected just by meeting their basic needs and attaining food. Having the opportunity to participate in this professional development course and attaining the resources for my class will assist me in leveling my students' understanding in math and science while preparing them so that they have a fighting chance.
