Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Pre-K through 5th grade students at a Title 1 school. My students are considered at-risk because of their economic status and language barriers.

Many students are aware that the country is in a recession, but they do not quite understand what it means. Counting and learning how to save money is an obstacle we are striving to overcome. The idea of how banks and other financial institutions function is not common knowledge for my students.

I need that resources will teach students coin and dollar values and how to add and subtract money. Students will race around game boards calculating their expenses and earnings while trying to save as much money as possible. Pretend bank accounts will be opened to help them learn how to manage their funds and balance a checkbook. Students will work in teams to show various dollar amounts in expanded notation using decimal boards, then they'll count out the funds represented using play money. Decimal cubes will be used to teach students decimal number order from the thousandths to the thousands place.

Your assistance will materialize a economic learning experience for 640 under privileged students. These tools will be used for years to come, empowering students with basic money/financial knowledge that will help them for the rest of their lives.
