Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Dodgers fan, track and field athlete, singer, dancer, mathematician, skater, poet, rapper -- these are some of characteristics with which my students identify. Sixty-five percent of them are emerging bilinguals and 100% of them receive free and reduced lunch (but they'll trade school food for Takis any day).

These 15 and 16-year olds are brilliant, outspoken, creative, and hilarious.

They have historically been labeled as the "bad kids" by their teachers, but in my class, they are intellectual heavy lifters. They are mind builders, young scholars, blossoming academics. They are labeled the “bad kids,” but they are my favorite kids, and I want them to have every opportunity and every luxury in my classroom so they can achieve to the heights.

My Project

My students are engaged speakers and fabulous talkers, and they crave literature that will touch their hearts and open their minds to diverse experiences. With access to the young adult novel Akata Witch, students will get to dive into a magically realistic world focused on "a quartet of magic students, studying the visible and invisible, learning to change reality," according to the book jacket.

Described as "the Nigerian Harry Potter," Akata Witch gives students the chance to read about a girl and her friends gaining powerful skills that help them defeat the forces of evil in their world.

With all the political turmoil of the present day, students need and deserve texts that show them how change is possible. Akata Witch does that and more in a fun, relatable, and very readable way.
