Fighting COVID's Mental Health Impact On Montana High School Students

I need funding to attend a well known SEL, mindfulness & yoga training specifically designed for educators!

My Students

Students at my small high school in rural Montana are working hard to figure out what the new COVID "normal" is. We are back in school and are embracing all sorts of "normal high school" programming like arts, music, sports, and tutoring. In spite of this, students and staff are still working through the intense emotional drain of the pandemic.

My students are craving ways to deal with the emotions created by the pandemic and lockdown.

They are flocking to activities that build community and are reading books about mental health, anxiety, depression, and mindfulness. They are seeking strategies to process the last several years of their young lives.

My Project

I am requesting the funding to attend Breathe For Change, a 200-hour professional development opportunity designed specifically for educators that focuses on yoga, mindfulness and social emotional learning. Breathe For Change’s curriculum is grounded in Dr. Ilana Nankin’s dissertation research, which revealed the critical connection between educator well-being and student learning.

The ongoing impact of the pandemic on the mental health of our students and staff is significant and this training will provide me with the knowledge, strategies and lessons I need to make a positive impact on the mental health in my school and community.

Upon graduation from this program, I plan to lead school-based yoga classes, social-emotional learning, and wellness experiences throughout my school district and the greater Flathead Valley. I want to offer these experiences without requiring payment from any person who wants to attend. A fully funded project from DonorsChoose will allow me to do this. THANKS!
