Fifth Graders Need Sharpened Pencils!

My students need pencils to practice math skills on a daily basis. My classroom is in need of a strong pencil sharpener to sharpen pencils while my students "sharpen" their brains!

My Students

Forty-six young men and women, of different backgrounds and beliefs, enter my classroom daily. They help each other in this journey called 5th grade. Our elementary school has nearly 700 students attending, with close to 100 in fifth grade, alone. Church Point is a small rural town in southern Louisiana.

Many of my students are working very hard to achieve and accomplish the status of being "on grade level" in mathematics.

A select few are "above grade level." I am constantly trying to differentiate and meet the needs of these learners.

My Project

Sharpened pencils are such an important part of a math classroom. Having pencils sharp and ready for my students as they enter my class sets a great tone for math lessons.

Sharpening pencils is time consuming and difficult without the correct equipment.

An electric pencil sharpener would be much more efficient than the manual pencil sharpener we currently use in our class. My students and I can spend our time working on complicated math concepts instead of housekeeping tasks. My students use pencils for bellwork, Eureka modules, and scratchwork. I also allow students who do not have pencils at home to borrow pencils to complete homework assignments.
