Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the opportunity to teach 48 kind and hardworking fifth graders in a high poverty, public school in Chicago, IL. We are in a predominately Latino neighborhood. My school is a Title 1 school and 100% of students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students don't deserve to have minimal resources at school because of the area they live in or their socioeconomic status.
My students are eager to become better readers, but with our limited resources and at this point in the school year, my students are struggling to find books in our classroom library that they are interested in that they have not read already.
My Project
I have taught for three years, but this is my first year teaching fifth grade. At this school we are departmentalized so this year I am teaching the entire fifth grade reading and writing. I have about 50 students "checking out" books from our classroom library on a daily basis. In these last three years I have collected and bought books to contribute to our classroom library, but it is not nearly as full or complete for as many students as I have. We are halfway through the school year, so at this point in the year students are running out of choices of books to read!
Our school does not have a librarian, so as the reading teacher I am responsible for providing books for my students.
The books included in this project are books that my students have hand picked themselves. They have done research to find book titles that they are interested in reading and would love to have added to our classroom library! Students will be using these books on a daily basis. We use them as independent reading books to work on specific skills to become better readers and also to read for pleasure!
