My students need stamps, postcards, markers and colored pencils to participate in a country wide postcard exchange.
My students are enthusiastic, energetic learners. They love having a purpose for what they are doing. They love projects where they have opportunity for choice. They love letting their creativity shine when they are given an open ended task.
My students are social by nature and love experiences that lead to forming connections.
In this day and age, connection with others is vital. They are constantly given the opportunity to collaborate and work as a team so that they can build up these skills.
The materials that I am requesting will make it possible for my students to participate in a post card exchange with other fifth grade classrooms around the country. Over the summer, I coordinated with other fifth grade teachers to ensure that we had a plan to make this roll out smoothly. Students will send a postcard to a classroom in all the other states in the country. In turn, my students will also receive a postcard from a classroom in each state. We will need the postcards and postage in order to send our postcards out to each state. Students will work collaboratively to write letters on their postcards that will help teach others about where we live. As we receive post cards, students will be in charge of coloring in that state on our map, so that we can keep track of who we have heard from.
Participating in a postcard exchange will give my students exposure to other states around our country, when they may not have a chance to actually travel.
My school has a poverty rate of 38.3%, which limits what students have access to in their day to day lives. Many students do not have the opportunity to travel and see our country firsthand. However, I will be able to offer a meaningful educational experience to my students through a postcard exchange. Instead of just teaching them about the states through a textbook, students will learn about the various states in our country from kids their own age. This is second best to actually traveling to the state, which is not an option. Students will also take pride in where they live by teaching others about their home.
I am passionate about creating a love for learning. Meaningful experiences are key!
