This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach the academically gifted reading program for our fifth graders. The school that I teach at is in an urban area and we are considered an "At Risk" school. More than 75% of our students come from poverty level households and are on free and reduced lunch.
We read some wonderful novels in my class and I require students to analyze different aspects of literature as they read. I want to have enough copies of the novels for each of my 12 students to have their own copy. Their families are not able to purchase the books for the students to use.
Many times, as the students read, they run across words or phrases they don't understand or want to share. If they had their own book, they could mark the passages and we could discuss them in class. "Marking up a book" is a teaching strategy that helps students stay focused on reading and builds comprehension.
