Fifth Grade Frog Dissection

My Students

My students are curious and love to explore science through hands-on learning. This is the way students learn best. I want to be able to give my fifth graders a memorable scientific learning experience this year. Part of our curriculum involves identifying and describing both the parts and functions of the body organs. I am hoping to get enough frog specimens for each student to dissect. With my budget I already have five specimens, so I hope to get 13 more. We would also need dissection scissors to perform the dissections more independently.

My Project

I will first have students participate in a virtual frog dissection. This helps students to identify the frog’s organs when it comes to the actual dissection. This will also give students the understanding of how a dissection works. It teaches the students important terminology as well as how and where to cut. I will then start the incisions for the students and they will take over with the dissection scissors. I will have the students identify the organs as well as their function. When students can learn hands-on, they are more likely to retain information. The students will definitely remember this activity.
