My students are thoughtful, innovative, and passionate scholars. They come to class each day ready to engage in academic dialogue and take risks. These 5th grade scholars are becoming agents of change and are engaged in expanding their understanding of social issues in their own community and beyond. My students ask hard questions, observe and describe patterns and connections, and make compelling conclusions about the world.
My students excitedly engage in rigorous learning to grow their ideas and are eager to envelop themselves in ideas that challenge them and in issues and causes that they care about.
Our school is located in Northeast Portland. It is a racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse Title I school. Our students have been resilient and flexible during the transition to online school, but completing literacy units without being able to provide copies of books to students has been a challenge for us, our students, and their families. Students miss having access to physical books that engage their minds and hearts, and that are a meaningful part of an elementary school experience.
My Project
These Fifth Grade Brains are growing fast, and so are their bodies! We can't keep up! We are out of snacks to help us keep focused during our scholarly learning times, and student testimony this year has been that it is so much easier to focus on growing their brains in math, social studies, language arts, health, and more when they don't have to worry about being hungry.
It is so important to be able to meet student basic needs, including hunger, before pushing them to do rigorous academic learning.
This year, our breakfast and lunch are scheduled quite far apart due to social-distancing and safe-eating protocols. Additionally, our school is working hard to supply snacks to classrooms, but fifth graders are often hungry enough to need more food than the school meals and snacks provided with the limited school budget. Students are spending their math and focused math and reading intervention and independent practice times hungry. When I am able to offer them a snack, they have so much more energy to put into their learning, and therefore are able to make significantly more progress in their math, reading interventions, and independent practice.
With this project, I will be able to offer my students supplementary nutritious and filling snacks when they are hungry. This can mean the difference between a child that puts their head down during learning time and a child that feels full enough to focus on math or reading rather than focusing on how uncomfortable it is to be hungry and trying to learn at the same time. Your support will directly impact these students' academic progress for the rest of this school year.
