Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a small charter school servicing a diverse community, students chose to attend our school due to our hands-on, student-centered approach to learning. Our students are future engineers, designers, architects, and job site leaders.
They want to learn, especially when the work allows for discussion, movement, and creative input.
Like most of us, they don't want to sit in a chair for hours on end, passively receiving information. The more they can DO, the better they can show what they know.
When students experience concepts through real-world scenarios requiring critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity, they are not only engaged, but they naturally want to deepen their understanding. Our goal is to provide every student the opportunity to find connections to their learning, not just in other classes, but in the world around them, and to help foster a desire for life-long learning.
My Project
In AP Environmental Science, we learn about ecosystems and the impacts that humans and other factors have on those ecosystems. We are fortunate enough to live just a short boat ride from the Channel Islands, a national park known by many as the "Galapagos of the North" due to its biodiversity and unique organisms. Often on the boat, there are chances to see pods of dolphins, migrating whales, and even sunfish basking in the California sunshine.
Providing an in-person experience in which students can view the wildlife and plants native to the islands, as well as understand the impacts of invasive species, will have a lasting impression on the students and their environmental stewardship.
We have spent the first semester learning about ecosystem interactions and populations, including a study on the near extinction and human-aided recovery of the Channel Islands Fox. The opportunity to see the Island Fox's natural habitat and perhaps even catch a glimpse of the tiny fox would be a once-in-a-lifetime for many of my students, who, despite living so close to the islands, have never visited them. This project will cover the bus transportation and the boat transportation for this field trip.
It is never the textbook we read or the PowerPoints that we remember, but the unique experiences we have. Your help in providing these students such an incredible opportunity is greatly appreciated!
