Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
McNamara is a very unique school in southwest Houston that is 96 % economically disadvantaged with a diverse population. Over twenty languages are spoken on our campus due to our cultural diversity which includes: Hispanics, African Americans and Aslyee/refugee students from Africa and the Middle East. Ninety-six percent of the students receive free or reduced lunch and many are enrolled in the Backpack Buddy program, weekly donations of non-perishable food items for the family.
Our surrounding community was one of the hardest hit by Hurricane Harvey and numerous families were displayed.
Despite the physical, mental and emotional challenges our boys and girls continue to thrive. A comparison of our Renaissance middle and beginning of the year data indicates that our students showed significant gains in literacy and math across grade levels. WE ARE HOUSTON STRONG!!!!!!
My Project
Our goal is to bridge literacy with media while exposing 4th and 5th grade students to a worthwhile field experience.
Because many of our students live at or below the poverty line, they are not able to explore and deepen their learning with a lived experience.
Texas requires students to identify the role of television and film and how artists contribute to society. A Wrinkle in Time is a classic, and the film is going to have an enormous cultural impact due to the diversity of the cast. It will also be the first time an African American woman directs a big budget film. Just like Black Panther, students will get the opportunity to be a part of history. With your contribution, students will get the opportunity to have a hands-on experience and read an amazing novel.
