Help me give my students the chance to experience, apply, and extend the Science curriculum by going on a field trip to the Pine Jog Environmental Education Center.

Our students attend a Title I school on the shores of Lake Okeechobee, they face many challenges both in and out of the classroom. The school is located in a low-income/high poverty area. The student population is 1% White, 64% Black, and 34% Hispanic. Being raised in a farming town means that many families are migrants and travel during agricultural seasons. As a result of the socio-economic status of the families in the community, 98% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Additionally, most students are not provided opportunities to travel beyond our city's limits.
Ten years ago our school became an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School.
Internationalism is celebrated through our hallways, school culture and our innovative units of inquiry. As an IB World School we teach our students to become global thinkers and learners. The school provides rigorous academics and a safe learning environment. We are striving to provide our students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My project will provide our students with an up-close encounter to the nature of science. We are organizing a field trip to Pine Jog Environmental Education center, Florida. This trip will allow our students to experience hands on scientific investigations. It will help our students understand the scientific method and improve their critical thinking skills, for example, how to make inferences, draw conclusions, and make judgments when presented with a situation.
By providing my students the opportunity to attend this trip, I hope to enrich their knowledge of the scientific method and improve their understanding of concepts related to the nature of science.
My students live in a very rural area and most do not travel beyond our community. I believe that if we are to create productive members of society, our students must become knowledgeable about the world around them. This culminating activity will help our students understand the scientific method and improve their critical thinking skills. As a result, this experience will assist students in increasing their performance on the statewide science assessment. By providing my students the opportunity to attend this trip, I hope to enrich their knowledge of the scientific method and improve their understanding of concepts related to the nature of science.
