One of my favorite activities is popping into a book store and buying new books. I can\'t seem to enter Barnes and Noble without spending money, and there\'s nothing like owning a new book - running my fingers along the soft, smooth cover, reading with the knowledge that I can write in the margins and underline sentences I love, and having the chance to trade good books with friends. Of course, most of my 7th grade English students do not make frequent trips to the book store, and all year long they read borrowed books - books they don\'t own, can\'t write in, and don\'t have the opportunity to re-read. Since I use the reading workshop in my classroom, students have a lot of choice in their reading selection. However, I would like to make that choice as real as possible and take them to the Barnes and Noble located at Union Square in Manhattan. I know that a trip to the school or local library offers the same variety in book selection, but I\'d really like my students to be able to choose a book to keep as their own. I am requesting Barnes and Noble gift cards for 46 students total. The entire field trip will consist of selecting new books at Barnes and Noble, followed by reading in Union Square Park. This experience is one that my friends and I make time for as adults, and I would like my students to see how pleasurable and exciting reading can be.
