My students need sensory items to help with often-overlooked sensory needs.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are all part of a Head Start program in the public school system. These are the students who are often misjudged and undervalued. They are written off before they have a chance, and they are only three years old!
My students are so eager to show the world how great they can be!
Most of my students are African-American and, due to the nature of Head Start, come from poor, urban, inner-city areas. Most receive other forms of government assistance, and I worry if some families have food to eat over the weekend.
Despite having almost every card stacked against them, they show up every day, ready and eager to learn.
Young children fidget-it's in their job description. But, when the fidgeting becomes a danger to themselves or others, it's time to intervene. While they are learning to sit for brief periods of time, they may need some help. Small items for the students to play with, called "fidgets", can be helpful for that child who needs to keep their hands busy so their mind can stay focused.
Sometimes, students need more than just a quiet fidget.
They need to tumble, climb, or roll to meet their sensory needs. A quick 2-3 minute break to take care of some sensory needs can make the difference between success and struggle for many children. The mats and the yoga ball will help meet the needs of children who require a little more input to their system. By providing these sensory items for my classroom, you are helping my students stay safe. They will no longer be climbing on or jumping off of furniture, pushing children, or rolling over a chair to meet their sensory needs. They can roll over the yoga ball, they can put pressure on their hands during yoga ball play, and they can climb and jump off of a safe structure in the classroom.
