Fidgety and Creative 4-Year-Olds Need Seating and STEM
Help me give my students the ability to maximize their learning by choosing the best seat for their active needs. The building materials maximize creativity by helping with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) projects.
My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of them are being raised in single-parent or grandparent households and 100% receive a free or reduced-priced lunch. Some of these families are still trying to recover from devastating floods in 2016. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical." My public school PreK classroom is designed to help these children get ready for kindergarten and to assist parents with community resources.
My students are active, love attention, and are eager to learn.
Many of my students are so happy to come to school that they would rather be here than home or anywhere else. From the moment they walk in my door, I try to give them a positive learning experience and shower them with the love and attention they deserve. I am hoping to contribute to the creation of life-long learners and to show these little ones that they are loved and important.
My Project
Flexible seating options allow students to choose where they learn best. We all know that every child learns differently and their environment has a huge impact on that. Not only do I want to create a space where kids can choose their best learning seat but I want to provide opportunities for them to use their creativity by providing materials for STEM projects.

I started using flexible seating options in my room this school year through a donors choose grant and it has been WONDERFUL. There has been a huge difference in behavior and I am excited to offer more options. My students will be allowed to choose if they would like to sit in a wobble seat, on a balance ball, a stool, or a standard plastic chair while at tables working in small groups. My students will decide which seating option helps them learn best. During whole group lessons some students will choose to sit on stability discs, pillows, or bitty bottom seats rather than the standard floor mat. I will allow students to bring other flexible seating options like wobble seats and balance balls to the floor mat if they choose to. Alternative seating gives students the opportunity to move, get those wiggles out, and still maximize their learning time!
The STEM building materials will be placed in a center where students are given the opportunity to use their creativity and engineering skills to build all kinds of things. Students have started these types of projects with items such as mini cups, legos, craft sticks, and Q-Tips. They will be able to use these items to expand their projects and let their imaginations run wild!
