Help me give my students fidgets such as twiddle cat, chew necklaces, light up spinners, water wigglers and color changing lamp to help them engage in learning.
My students are full of energy and ready to explore their world. However, my students have a hard time understanding the world around them.
All of my student are diagnosed on the autism spectrum and most are low functioning.
Due to my students' disabilities, they face many obstacles daily including communicating (three of them are non-verbal), daily life skills, understanding the world around them, and dealing with why things change.
Our goal in my classroom is to help each child overcome their disabilities to become independent in their daily lives. This year, we will work on life skills, academic skills using teaching methods that are individualized for each child, as well as overcome their behavior challenges.
My Project
My students fidget, wiggle and bite throughout the day due to their disabilities which greatly interferes with their learning. My students can't control their wiggles on their own but with the correct materials they can appropriately replace the interfering behaviors. I am requesting twiddle cat to help my students who need to keep their hands moving and/or have visual sensory needs. Twiddle cat has strings to flap, move, bend, soft textures to touch, velcro pouch to pull and an orbit ball. My students who need to keep their hands busy, pulling is a great way to do this with a stretch dinosaur. My students who need visual sensory can use light up spinners to help them have a sensory break and reengage in learning. My student who needs oral input instead of biting himself or others he can use chew necklaces to get the oral input in a non-harmful manner.
These materials are a part of the solution to help my active students focus and progress in school.
These materials will provide my students with opportunities to appropriately and quietly fidget, wiggle and chew in the classroom. My students will be more engaged in learning and less engaged in problem behaviors with these sensory items.
