I teach a class full of 6th graders who learn in many different ways. Handling all the different learning styles and helping them can diffidently be a challenge, but can also be fun! I really enjoy helping them take responsibility for their own learning. Alternative seating can help them do just that.
I wish everyone could see how my students are not just comfortable, but really being able to concentrate in a seat they choose themselves.
With alternative seating the students don't all have to sit in a desk that looks the same. Some of student can be on pillows on the floor, while some are in standing desks.
My students come from a diverse background both economically and academically. While some of my students enjoy all that our community has to offer, others are not as fortunate. Many of my students' parents must work one and two jobs just to provide the basics. Academically, some of my students have experienced great success throughout their years in school, but several have struggled with obtaining just the basic level in their classes. With your help, my students can have a learning environment that fits their individual learning needs.
My Project
Having more flexible seating will help my students take responsibility for their learning. More flexible seating will allow my students to change several times during the day to where they work best in each subject area.
My student will be able to make more choices as to where they will work best as well as have an opportunity to move throughout the day.
Several of my students need to move several times during the day in order to concentrate on learning. The choice of seating as well the the bouncy bans will give my students a short burst of movement needed to concentrate on the next task.
Along with the flexible seating, adding the round and rectangle carpeting will add not just a soft place to sit, but a new look to an old room. I can't wait to see the looks on my student's faces when they walk into the room with brand new rugs.
Having a reminder that people other than in their school and family cares about their learning can give my students the push they need to succeed. I can tell them several times a day how wonderful they are, but with this project my student will see how people they don't even know care enough to make our classroom the best place it can be.
