Our school is home to almost 550 amazing aviators with diverse strengths, backgrounds, and needs. We work to support lifelong learners with the academic and social emotional skills to lead choice-filled, productive lives. As a school community, we use the Second Step social emotional learning curriculum in each of our classrooms. Students learn skills and traits like growth mindset, goal setting, emotion management, empathy, kindness, and problem solving, and practice them across grade levels.
This school year, we've created calming corners for students in every single classroom.
Students use calming strategies that they learn in their Second Step lessons to help themselves feel calm and safe. We need more quiet fidgets that students can use to regulate and return to learning. Students can play with a tangle or peapod while they practice slow breathing and thinking helpful thoughts, skills they learn in their Second Step lessons. This helps students bounce back to their learning in a safe and productive way.
