My students need access to noise reducing headphones, chair pillows and other sensory stimulating items to help them calm their bodies so that their brains can be open to learning in the classroom.
Many of my 8th graders have experienced poverty in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. My class serves many students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities.
They work very hard each day in school despite a range of disabilities that make everyday learning a bit of a struggle compared to their school aged peers.
With the support of materials to support their disabilities, they will be much more successful during their school day!
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, sitting under tables with clip boards, or sitting or laying on the floor with a clip board. Making sure students are comfortable in their own skin is an essential need for students who have challenges in learning.
My special education students are noticeably more engaged in their work and more focused on their tasks than on calming their bodies.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The chair pillows will help students sit comfortably on the floor and allow them to use laptop tables to work on. The various fidget tools will be extremely beneficial for some students that just need to get the wiggles out. The noise reducing headphones will provide some much needed quiet time to help them work within their own comfort zone.
I have seen how choice can positively affect my students work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
