Students in our school are from various socioeconomic backgrounds. We are a title I school and have students both in self contained and general education classrooms.
Students in our classrooms are both general education students and special education students with disabilities including speech/language disabilities, physical disabilities, cognitive disabilities, autism and other challenges such as ADHD and emotional and behavioral disabilities.
Our current learning standards and state standards require our students to be tested frequently to obtain data. It also requires students to learn for extended time without breaks.
My Project
Learning has changed in schools requiring students to sit and focus for longer periods of time. Students success has become dependent on their ability to remain on task without regard to student age or ability. Students become agitated, frustrated, distracted and may display behaviors because they are unable to meet their bodies gross motor/sensory needs to remain focused.
The equipment purchased for this project will be used to help students who have sensory needs calm and remain focused during extended classroom learning sessions.
The equipment will be placed in the classroom and will be available for students to use at their desk or at a station during work time or during lessons. The students will utilize the equipment to help them decrease frustration and increase visual focus by giving them an avenue to meet sensory needs by using equipment to squeeze balls, jump on a trampoline chew on a chew toy for example. Each student's sensory needs will be unique and the equipment will be matched to help the student with their individual need.
Our goal is to increase student academic success by meeting student sensory needs. By meeting student sensory needs we can decrease negative student behaviors and create a positive learning environment.
