Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from the most diverse part of Tampa Bay. Because of this, our population is made up of many English Language Learners. When they come into school, for most, it's their first time in school. It is up to us to make sure they get the best quality public education they deserve. My students are young, ambitious, and curious.
School is a time to explore and play, to imagine and create until the end of the day.
Our school is a Title I/Renaissance School. Most of our students are from low-income families which is reflected by our 91% free or reduced-price lunch status. Although my kids face socioeconomic challenges, they come to school every day willing to learn. I get the most satisfaction as a teacher when I see their faces light up when they finally understand something I'm teaching or when I read a book that they are interested in.
My Project
Flexible seating will allow my students to focus more on their learning. Wobbly stools and cushions offer alternative seating solutions which give students an outlet for their restlessness and excess energy. This will allow them an opportunity to deal with these issues while keeping their attention focused on learning. The Wobbly stools also help strengthen their core muscles which leads to greater concentration on their tasks.
In kindergarten, it's too early to diagnose students with ADHD, which leaves kids at a disadvantage because nothing gets done for their needs.
This eventually leads to the whole group losing focus whether or not the child is just fidgety or suffers from ADHD, learning grinds to a halt. The wobbly cushions will also allow students to get their wiggles out while participating in whole group activities on the rug. Both are lightweight and easy for the students to move around so they can use them during independent work time.
I have seen how these seats positively affect student’s behavior and I hope that my students will get to use this adaptive learning aid in the classroom!
