Help me give my students balance ball chairs, Magna-Tiles, and lap desks so they can have brain breaks and options to focus and be the best they can be!
I just started my second year teaching third grade. More and more in education, there seems to be a new trend in accommodating learning styles for students, which I think is wonderful and necessary!
My classroom is full of ELLs (English language learners), and I have kids who speak Spanish, Romanian, and Russian.
It can be a struggle to switch back and forth between two languages.
In the last year, I have gotten seven wobbly seats through Donors Choose, and it has been so impactful! My kids can wiggle while they work, and they aren't leaning back in chairs and falling over!
I want to add some other types of alternative seating and wiggle options for my kids to focus and not feel like they are getting in trouble for being off task.
My Project
It seems it is harder and harder for students to focus. At the beginning of the year, I asked my students what would make it easier to focus in class. Overwhelmingly, they responded with having something to fidget with or some kind of flexible seating.
I chose several different types of fidgets that I hope students can play with and still focus without distracting others.
I also chose yoga ball chairs that have a back on them, but kids can also bounce a little while they work and listen.
I am also a learner who doesn't sit still well, so I can relate to how my students feel. I am the lucky one because I get to move around a lot while I teach. It is harder for students to have that possibility. I want to do all I can to help them tap into learning and being able to focus and love school!
