My students need nonfiction books that will be of interest to them. For many students who do not like to read, finding something they are really interested in like the Titanic or the Beatles is key.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Most of my students come from low-income households. Many do not have cable, satellite, Internet, or technology equipment. Our school is known for its outstanding athletic programs which are fueled by caring coaches and community. There are other students, however, who do not have this support system.
When I was in the classroom and now that I work in the media center, I tend to support and encourage the "underdogs" who might not have an adult to help them aspire.
EVERY student has something special to contribute to our school, and he or she deserves to have an opportunity to accomplish this. All of our students should be encouraged to be productive and to excel.
Through DonorsChoose.org, I have been able to acquire many books (mostly fiction) to add to our library collection. Now that the fiction section has improved, my students need nonfiction books that will appeal to them and motivate them to read. My goal is to provide books of interest for those who simply hate reading or are not good at it. Who knows? Maybe by finding books that fit their interests, reading will hook students and become a pleasure to them!
My Project
John Deere Tractors, Wonders of the World, and Survival Skills! I cannot think of any other books that might entice a student who does not like to read or who has a lower reading level!
Because students need to improve their reading comprehension for tests like the ACT and SAT, our teachers are encouraging students to read more nonfiction books.
Many students think these kinds of books are so boring, but I found some exciting treasures that might change their minds.
Adding these books to our media center's collection will provide new titles and topics and will become a stepping stone to produce more students who are interested in reading in general. Your assistance will benefit our students so much. The lack of exposure to reading that many of them had when they were small has placed a huge burden on our high school teachers. Please consider giving so that our students might be work ready or even college ready . . . all because someone like you took the time to pay for a book that might seem completely insignificant to you and me.
