My students need books they love. They also need books they can read on their own - books that they read all night with a flashlight under the covers while parents think they are sleeping.
I want my students to love to read. Reading is more than character traits, theme, main ideas, and synthesis. It is finding friendships, heroes, and lessons in your favorite series book or your favorite author's books. It's about realizing that you are not alone; there are characters in books just like you. It's also about discovering how different people are. Following another's story about life changes how you view the world around you. Reading is knowing that the answer to your question, your dream, or your goal is just one nonfiction book away. Reading is your best friend and your way to learn the most you can about the topics you feel most passionate about.
How can I cultivate a love of reading in my students?
Step One is to make sure I have books in my classroom that my students can fall in love with. It is my goal to stock my classroom with just right fiction and nonfiction books so that my students can fall in love with reading. What greater gift could I give them?
My Project
These books will make such a difference in the classroom. Research shows that students who read the most are the strongest readers, highest achievers, and have the largest vocabularies. Students who love to read will always succeed.
This is why my main goal as a teacher is to match students with books they love and books they can read independently.
The books I am requesting are classics. Many adults will remember reading these books as children. Maybe one of the books on this list was a favorite of yours when you were younger. These are also series books. This is because research shows students who read series books become lifelong readers. I know this is true for me. The Nancy Drew series made me a reader for life. What series turned you into a lifelong reader?
These books will be used by students during our reading workshop units. The students will also read these books at home and complete reading entries on these stories.
