Fiction and Facts Through a Tale of Friendship (STEM)
Help me give my students a fun (and educational) way to explore a beautiful story of a faithful gorilla and a loving elephant through toy animals, drums, utility carts, etc.
Our students are creative and energetic learners who live in a small community with limited funding. They are highly motivated and enjoy opportunities to think outside the box. The community works hard to provide necessary resources for our students, but it is sometimes necessary to seek outside assistance to acquire materials that supplement our curriculum. We are always looking for ways to support our students' varied learning styles and needs. Community support in a small town is instrumental in helping to create a learning environment that fosters creativity and exploration!
My Project
This project is designed to give students a variety of lessons that are tied to one novel.
The items I have chosen will be used to work on lessons designed to be fun ways to learn about character, science, math, and art by reading Katherine Applegate's award-winning novel, The One and Only Ivan, a story of friendship and faithfulness.
We will be using art, math, and science activities, as well as reading and many discussions to look deeper into the lives of animals in captivity and the wild, and the themes of friendship, faithfulness, hope, and so much more that are at the core of the novel. We will be using various musical instruments to mimic animal calls. We will use a variety of supplies, from tissue paper to protractors, to create animal habitats. The books chosen will help us gain a deeper understanding of gorillas and elephants, and their lives in capitivity and the wild. Each supply is intended to help give students learn from hands-on experiences in math, science and art. I hope to be able to provide a long-term unit with the supplies purchased and lessons planned.
This project is inspired by lessons provided by STEM Read of Northern Illinois University.
