Fiber Fusion Art

My Students

As a visual arts specialist teaching fine arts, I have the joy of teaching imaginative students in a creative learning environment. They express themselves beyond the spoken and written word through their manipulation of art mediums. It's exciting to see students investigate the use of materials, processes, and ideas as I encourage them to grow artistically. They are unique in their approach and I'm proud of them for their willingness to reach beyond their comfort level and share their expressive artworks.

My Project

The fiber fusion art project demonstrates ways that textile art has developed over time. Students will examine the fiber artworks of Magdalena Abakanowicz, Lenore Tawney, and Sheila Hicks for inspiration. These professional artists create unusual fiber substrates as a base for their sculptures. Students will use a variety of textiles as a sculptural medium to create figurative sculptures as they relay their artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural, and historical context to deepen their understanding of the elements of art and principles of design.

Students will create personalized textile artworks using a sewing machine, fabrics, and ribbons as they sew and weave their ideas into tangible sculptures.

This project will provide students with materials that they currently don’t have access to so that they can generate and conceptualize textile artistic ideas and work. Providing students with open-ended fiber art sculpture projects offers them an opportunity to create a dimensional base structure as they explore, experiment, and discover the various ways fibers can communicate color, texture, and form. This project will increase students understanding and applications using fibers and textiles to create figurative sculptures.
