This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Remember your first art class, possibly in elementary school? One of the most exciting things about art class is you get to use all kinds of materials and techniques to create! Art is expressive! These kids work hard on learning new techniques and skills to improve their art-making, as well as find new ways to express themselves. I teach a group of diverse middle schoolers who need to be able to explore art in new ways they haven't before now!
My Project
My students think fiber art is cool! They have been experimenting with yarn, learning Kumihimo braiding from Japan, and weaving techniques to create wall tapestries. Through these projects, I have noticed my students want to learn more!
We need basic sewing and embroidery materials, such as embroidery needles, thread, and felt to get started.
We are going to learn sewing by creating ugly monsters! Students will use felt to create the body of their ugly monster and add additional characteristics with buttons, fabric, and thread. This will be a fun way to learn basic sewing techniques while making something of their own creation!
