Managing a school store is helping my students learn about entrepreneurship, marketing, and management. My students, grades 10-12, manage and operate a school store. It is a true learning laboratory in that they learn about risk, profit, pricing decisions, inventory, sales, and customer service. Our community is listed as a high poverty area. There are no "extras" in our school district, and certainly no luxuries. We do have young people with a strong work ethic and creativity. My students graduate with a working knowledge of business. Approximately 75 percent of my students attend college.
Fetch is the name of the service that my students created in the past month. The students contract with local restaurants to provide a food delivery service to those who have to leave early on buses for out-of-town sports events, choir or band performances, or intense play practices. We offer carry-out food menus from several of the restaurants.
At this early stage in the business, we cannot afford the colored paper to print out the order forms for menus to serve our customers. So far we have begged and borrowed the paper! It would also be very convenient to have a filing system to keep our records, files, and supplies for Fetch.
Your assistance would be greatly appreciated! Participating students and their parents have thanked us for the service. It is very stressful in this community to be released from school and only have ten to twenty minutes to get something to eat before leaving on the bus. Parents feel guilty if they have to leave work to deliver food to their student and they feel guilty if the student does not have food. Students who drive deal with the safety issue of getting to and from a restaurant and back to the bus on time. Proper colored paper keeps the Fetch employees organized and with less chance of mix-ups. A professional business with proper supplies and storage will teach the students organization. So far we have used two restaurants in the same day for two different delivery times. It can become hectic. As their teacher, I am proud of the students who created Fetch, a valuable service and new tradition.
