My students are absolutely amazing! The majority of my Biology students are freshman and sophomores at a school located in the southern region of San Diego, California. My kids come from diverse backgrounds, both ethnically speaking, as well as in way of their interests and future goals. One thing that they do have in common, however, is me! My goal is to provide them with experiences that are intriguing and inspiring, which will ultimately feed their natural passion to learn.
When I am excited about a project, my students become excited about a project.
Let's face it, nobody likes completing worksheets every day. As someone who cares about my kids, I want them to have fun, but more importantly, I want them to want to come to my class and want to learn. I want them to gain knowledge that stays with them. I want them to think back in twenty years from now and remember all of the awesome things they did in their Medical Biology Class.
As a high school biology teacher, I can think back to my days as a high school student. The things that are particularly memorable to me to this day are the dissections we conducted in our class, and not the mundane worksheets or textbook work we completed. I want to allow for my own students to have such memories of this biology class— and I know that these types of experiences will stay with them far into their future.
Having access to preserved specimens, such as fetal pigs, will allow for my students to study the anatomy of other mammals and make informed choices about the well-being of their own bodies.
Furthermore, many of my students are looking to pursue careers in the health or medical field, so this experience will also give them the insight for things to come as they continue their education.
