Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Readers are life long learners. I teach in a middle school that is over 70% Free and Reduced Lunches. The number of students who need additional resources is higher than normal due to one of the two plants closing. The number of Hispanic students is increasing yearly, which only adds to the demands of an elementary teacher. Language barriers add to the difficulty of teaching reading at any grade level when you may have six levels in one class. For example, this last year in my 6th grade class, I had K through 8th grade level readers.
With the plant that just closed a few months ago, my students are in need. Books aren't what parents are buying. Our school is over 70% Free and Reduced Lunches with a high level of minorities.
We need need a wide variety of books in different genres to read at different levels to support my students' reading interest and progress and school success.
I have listed books from the top experts in Literacy Lab that will help students become successful on the high stakes test. The most recent results from National Assessment of Educational Progress show beyond doubt that students who do the most practice/recreational reading score highest on state and national assessments of reading. Traditional it was a textbook and a test on each story.
Students are now doing author studies, different genres report, newspaper articles, and book talks. To be able to use the new evaluation standards, this small district is in need of additional funds to have a variety of books for student to select.
Reading is linked with school success, which in turn results in life success is why this program is so critical. Your help will ensure that my students have an opportunity to be successful. The funds would allow the students access to more choices and access is the key.
