Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every author needs his space. Every author needs her own set of writing utensils. Every author, even the kindergarten author, needs to have a set aside time of the day to write, or at least practice writing. Many times, my students tell me that they don't have a desk or even a table at which to write. They sometimes tell me they don't have paper, pencils, or crayons. Time they have to devote to writing varies. I'd like to send home a “writing kit” with every kindergartener, every day.
I am a Kindergarten teacher in a low-income area in the inner city of Los Angeles, CA. My class consists mainly of immigrant children, speaking little to no English. The English speakers in my class come from low-income housing and shelters. About half of my students are stepping into a classroom, holding pencils, and coloring for the first time in their lives. This is as frustrating for them as it is for me. The academic expectations placed on kindergarten students today is much more rigorous than it used to be. What they need is practice, everyday, outside of school, to compete with those who've been “writing” since they were age two.
The kit, that I propose to put together for them, will, I hope, be inspiring, not only to the children, but their parents, as well. The kit starts with a sturdy take-home bag. The items inside the bag are as follows: a double-sided, write-on, wipe-off whiteboard (this can double as a portable writing surface for paper), 2 non-toxic write-on, wipe-off markers, an eraser, a paperback picture dictionary, “idea” cards, paper, and a pencil. I intend to have a parent discussion night to involve parents in the writing “career” of their children. I'd like to emphasize the importance of learning by example and encourage the parents to use the writing kits with their children then record their writings on paper and return to school with their child to share with the class.
