Reading is one of the best ways to improve almost every aspect of your life- both academically and socially. Unfortunately, it is the last thing most middle schoolers want to do! Books need to be current and compelling. They need to mirror (in some regard) the students' lives to hold interest.
My students are AMAZING!
I have students that speak multiple languages, students that participate in myriad after-school activities (from the common little league and dance to the more obscure fencing and synchronized swimming). Because of their broad interests, I am constantly on the hunt for new and exciting reading materials for them. In the past, either myself or the students would supply books to the classroom library, however, the decline in the economy has prevented this from happening as much this year.
My Project
I am attempting to fill my classroom library with books that mirror things my students participate in in their lives. Right now, I am focusing on sports, as I see that is where I currently have massive gaps in my classroom library. These high-interest books will hopefully capture my students' attention and make them want to read.
Middle school is the make-it-or-break-it moment in a child's education.
It is where students can be inspired to continue the love of education fostered in elementary school to carry them on through to high school. It is also where students can be lost- lost to the uninspired blah that plaques so many of our high school students. As a reading teacher, I have the ability to inspire students to travel to other world. Worlds that can hold their attention and make them want more!
