Too many children are overweight! Many kids today eat fast food at least three times a week, and play PlayStation daily. Our kids are not fit. I have a nutrition unit that helps educate my students and parents on eating right, but poor diet is only half of the problem. Most of the children are not getting enough exercise.
I intend on giving them a healthy workout four times a week by playing Scooter Board Hockey, Scooter Board (nurf)Basketball, Scooter Board Volleyball(lowered net), Scooter Board Relays, and whatever other games we can invent using the Scooter Boards. When using these Scooter Boards, all of the children will get a good workout at least 90% of the Physical Education period all while playing a game and having a great time.
Instead of using one puck, basketball, or soccer ball, there will be several of each equipment item. The children will work together as a team to win the game. With the hockey, for example, I'll start the game putting 20 pucks on each team's side. After five minutes I'll blow the whistle, count the pucks on each team and give points for every puck. After playing several rounds, the team that has the least amount of points wins. Therefore the children are working hard to get the pucks on the other team's side before I blow the whistle so that they won't get points.
I've seen activities like this at another school and the children were having a blast all while getting a fabulous workout!
I teach all subjects at a Title One school. I am also the Physcial Education Coordinator for my entire school. The materials that I am requesting will benefit all of the students at the school for many, many years. I hope to get three sets of the Ultra Glide Scooter Boards(for a total of 18), two sets of Minishoot Sticks (for a total of 24), and a Scooter Stacker Cart for storing the equipment.
These colorful boards will be a fabulous way for our students to get a fun, team building, cardiovascular workout. I can't wait!
