My Students

I teach at a Title I School located in an urban area of a major northeastern city. 74.7% of the student population is economically disadvantaged and receive free and reduced lunch. Because of the financial crisis our state faces in education, it is a huge challenge to acquire the necessary, age-appropriate, materials and furniture my students need to succeed and learn. 17% of our students are Limited English Proficiency, which makes it a challenge for them to learn basic Math and ELA skills. In addition to three quarters of our population being economically disadvantaged, many of our children also come from homes where English is rarely or never spoken. This creates a challenge for me as I teach elementary foundational skills.

My Project

The flexible seating balance balls will make a difference in my student's learning in a variety of ways. I have 23 students in my Kindergarten class. More than 75% turned 5 years old within the past 3 months and this is their first time in any sort of school setting. It is a huge challenge for me to keep their focus for a decent stretch of time. The balance balls will help keep my young ones engaged, focused and motivated. They will also help to improve their posture! As we all know, children learn in different ways and at different times; therefore these balance balls will help differentiate learning for my students as well. They will be able to collaborate in small group sessions, participate in circle "good things" time, and build their reading stamina during reading time because they will be more comfortable.
