This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students in my school are resilient learners who are eager to explore the world. Unfortunately, not only does our Title I school struggle under the "failing school" label and the bias and low-expectations that breeds, it also is perpetually underfunded and understaffed. Combined, these circumstances leave many critical educational opportunities unavailable to my students. Despite having limited access to enriching experiences and materials, students here refuse to be defeated and keep giving their best, day in and day out.
With the help of the generous donors of DonorsChoose, I hope to build a classroom that tells my students that they matter, that their education matters, and that their futures matter.
My Project
Two of the greatest strategies a teacher can use to help disengaged students are building individualized learning experiences and building connections between the classroom and the world beyond.
With a classroom library that offers stories of resilience and hope, as well as strategies for creating a fulfilling future, I hope that disengaged students- students who may be failing multiple classes or who struggle with high absenteeism- will reconnect with learning and see it as a tool to positively shape their lives.
I have selected titles of every genre, written by a diverse group of authors about an abundance of topics. I hope that this library is inspiring and will help students not only learn about the things that they are individually interested in, but to also discover passions they haven't considered yet. All of these books provide a window into the world beyond the classroom, and hopefully will inspire students to connect what they are doing during high school to what they'd like to do in the future.
I plan to use these books for independent reading projects, where students will not only choose their books, but also choose their culminating projects. These projects will seek to help students explore how the texts helped them discover connections to the world beyond high school.
The gift of this classroom library will likely be one of the most important tools in helping my most disengaged students, as it will provide them with the autonomy to make a choice of a book and a project that they feel fits their needs the most.
