Our school is located on the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland. We are a Title I school with a high percentage (approximately 70%) of students living at or below the poverty level. Our school is a small, rural community school with less than 400 students in grades 4-8.
Despite the many challenges my students face, they are eager to learn and they love science.
I love being part of their journey in scientific knowledge and feel that it is my responsibility to get them excited about science so they will have an eagerness to learn in high school and college.
We are small but mighty. We have a lot of school spirit and it really is a great place to spend my time. We are very active in the community and focus on building positive relationships both in and outside of the school setting.
Many of our students come from homes of poverty and are never exposed to the benefits of stock ownership. Living paycheck to paycheck does not allow for spending on items that are viewed as risky. With some knowledge, the risk level can be managed and the benefits can be huge.
This project will supply classroom resources to begin our journey in financial literacy; the book and game will allow me to provide some instruction before we invest and the laptop will give students access to the online stock market game.
The goal of this project is to create a group of students who can make educated decisions about the best way to invest and reap the rewards of good choices.
