My Students

After three years of teaching in the dual language program, I still am blown away by the students and families in my program. Never in my previous experiences had I worked in a school where ALL students were given the opportunity to speak Spanish and English, which has meant that I have African American, Latino and White students all working together during a lesson in beautiful Spanish. What a gift for our students! Their parents made the decision to give them the gift of bi-literacy and the opportunity to actively engage in an increasingly globalized world!

This year, my students will be in a new building and in a new community because our building was merged with another district school.

In a last minute, staffing move I was assigned to four-year-old kindergarten (4K).

I was initially nervous about the move and wondered whether or not I was the right person for these students. This class has shown me that 4K is the most joyful place to teach. My students arrive each day with a sense of wonder and the desire to learn. They are kind with each other and they continue to grow in their sense of community.

My Project

Sensory tables are an important part of the early learning experience. A sensory table is basically a table full of materials that get children to use all five senses. The table is set up to let children learn and engage their senses through interacting with the materials in the table.

Each month I change my sensory tables to keep students engaged as well as focus on different fine-motor, social, and language skills.

Sensory tables demand the children use their fine motor by having grasp objects like feathers, pompoms, and different utensils. Students use their language skills to talk with classmates while they work together to create and use their imaginations around the sensory tables. They will also interact with the items in ways that get them to count, organize, match, and classify objects. Lastly, students utilize their social/emotional skills as their share materials and take turns.

All of the requested items will be used to create these experiences for my students at my sensory table that uses wet materials as well as at my sensory table that uses dry materials. A wide variety of materials are needed to provide a year's worth of sensory table experiences!
