Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most of the students in my school are Hispanic, and many of them are classified as English Language Learners. They spend an incredible amount of time not just on academics, but on "test preparation". I am wanting to start a Rhythm Club that will let them get up, work together, and have fun.
We have one of the best schools in the district!
Our students are hard-working and good kids. Our school also happens to be 100% free lunch and 99% minority, mostly Hispanic. We are also a Title 1 school and most, if not all, of our students are considered "at-risk". These kids come to school and work very hard, and most of them miss out on enrichment activities that make school and growing up interesting and fun. They have a burning desire, though, to get involved and try new things.
My Project
This project requests Percussion Kongas, sound shapes, a Gathering Drum, one Floor Tom, a Boomwhackers Chromatic Set, Nino wood percussion instruments and Wood Blocks.
These materials will be used to start a rhythm club and drum circle. In fact, instead of just benefiting one group or classroom of students, the club will be a revolving group of students, so that as many students as are interested will have the opportunity to be a part of the group. I am also getting trained as a facilitator for drum circles, where we can see drumming not only as fun, but also learning about self esteem and teamwork.
Our students work extremely hard preparing for standardized tests.
These rhythm instruments will help them have an outlet for fun, creativity, and getting in touch with their musical culture. As a result, we will have students who feel like they belong to something and who are excited to come to school. They will be able to try something that they otherwise would not have been able to participate in.
