Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Creating a dynamic learning environment through the use of technology is paramount for my students. I teach 9th grade Biology and 11th grade AP Biology at a charter school in South Los Angeles. This is my second year teaching as well as my second year working in this school district. Our mission is to get every student into one of the top 100 colleges and universities in the country and to prepare them to compete and complete with their more affluent counterparts. We are located in a high-need region of LA where approximately 98% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. These students are bright and deserve an opportunity to become exposed to learning with technology.
I make an effort every day to interest my students through application. I had a professor during my undergraduate study that once said, “Science is life,” and I believe it is essential that I find a way to exemplify that phrase in every lesson. Given that we are a new charter school we are constantly trying to find unique opportunities to give our students the best education possible using the very limited resources we are provided. I am passionate about Biology and I think it is my charge to create a new generation of scientists for this country.
In Biology, some of the concepts that students have the most difficultly with are those that need a more complex visual aid. I feel that with the use of the multimedia projector we will be able to explore the subject like never before. I want my students to travel inside the cell and follow food through the digestive system. I want them to connect their foundational knowledge to the concepts presented in virtual labs and I want them to watch, listen, and later debate the topic of evolution based on opinions presented in class videos and online articles. They will benefit greatly from having exposure to this amazing technology and it will be applied in daily lessons as well as review sessions.
Making this contribution has the potential to impact the lives of several future leaders. As we move through the units in Biology this projector will support our learning and allow us to explore the world of science. Working in an inner city school allows me to constantly search for solutions to our challenges. Please consider being a part of this solution and support these amazing kids in their discovery of our world.
