Feeding Norman the Hydroponics Way

Help me give my students a garden to learn about hydroponics and its importance of possible future food production if we ever colonize Mars. We will also use the indoor garden to feed our class pet, Norman!

My Students

My class is an exciting group of mixed interests, abilities, and goals. They love STEM activities, crafting, math centers, and Kahoot! They also relish in their weekly Genius Hour time. Most of all, they absolutely love their class pet—a guinea pig named Norman! He has taught my class so much about responsibility and how to care for another being. It has been amazing to watch my kids love on this little animal. Norman has been such an asset to my class. Norman is also very lucky to have such sweet caretakers, as well!

My Project

My kids are heavily invested in all things STEM, and our class guinea pig, Norman. One of our yearly STEM units is Marsville, where we entertain the possibility of living on Mars someday. We do extensive research of The Red Planet, as well as what to consider to survive there. One area of study is “food production” on Mars. My students find that hydroponics is a solution to growing food since the Martian soil is of poor quality. This indoor garden will not only show my students how hydroponics works, but it is also a way to provide food for Norman.
