Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are all recent immigrants from Cape Verde, Vietnam, Dominican Republic, Iraq, Somalia, Honduras, and more. Many of my students have only been in the country a few months. Most of my students live in poverty and will be the first in their families to graduate college. Some will be the first in their families to graduate high school.
My students are all eager, curious, and excited learners.
They have faced incredible obstacles in their lives and demonstrate an inspiring amount of resiliency and perseverance. After school, many of them work full time or provide childcare for their families. Many students are food insecure, many have experienced intense trauma in their lives, and many are homeless.
My Project
Twice a week, our students spend their own time practicing their debate skills after school. They participate in a policy debate league, where they use evidence from multiple sources to construct nuanced arguments either in support or against the resolution. Currently, they are debating about the merits of more STEM education in schools. They then compete in 6 tournaments throughout the year.
During practices, our students are hungry!
Our practices run late into the evening, long after students have received their school lunch. We hope that by providing them healthy snacks such as popcorn and granola bars, they will be able to commit to their learning even more.
Debate has had a huge impact on the academic skills of our students, creating strong speakers and more confident students. With healthy snacks, we hope that our debaters will be fully fueled for success.
