My students need 6 great books about "water" as well as a hydration station (water cooler) in the library, because they currently have no access to water in our library.
Have you ever been so thirsty that you could not think of anything else? My students have no access to water when they are in the library. As Leonardo da Vinci said, "Water is the driving force of all nature". My students cannot concentrate when they are dehydrated.
My students attend a small K-6 public school and use a library that is over 30 years old.
Originally our library was a hallway, now it has walls but no access to water. I work with 120 wonderful K-2 students every week. Many of them are at-risk. Over half of them qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch, but we are not a Title I school. We lack the resources of many schools. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. Since we are near two military bases, we also have a significant number of military families. My students need to drink more water during the day
My Project
Every week I teach library skills to students in grades K-6. Each week during the year it becomes increasingly difficult to teach because they have no access to water while they are in the library.
This is a very simple request. I would like to have a water cooler in the library. Currently my students must either go without water for nearly an hour or lose valuable class time by going to a water fountain in another wing of the building.
I also want some books about the importance of water and hydration so we could study the topic and learn to make healthy choices. This project would encourage students to drink more water during the day and to forgo sugary drinks at lunch and dinner.
This is not a flashy project--it is very basic and very much needed. My students need easy, ready access to water so they can hydrate and concentrate on their lessons.
The students who use my library are wonderful inquisitive children but they need access to water so they can stay alert and complete their assignments.
I am working on a donation of some water bottles for K-3 which would also help. Currently my students are not drinking enough water. This is a tragedy that can be averted with the help of donors. The impact will be immediate and long lasting. My students will know that someone cares about their health and success.
