Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My second-grade scholars come from different socioeconomic backgrounds. They range between the ages of 7 and 8 years old and receive their education in an urban environment with a population of 43.4% Black, Non-Hispanic, 26.5% Hispanic, 24.4% White, Non-Hispanic, and 4.6% Multiracial. My school participates in the Federal Free School Lunch program where 100% of our scholars receive a nutritional meal every day. They come to school despite what they are going through and work hard to accomplish set goals.

We are also one of few STEM schools in the school district that provides all of our scholars with an equal opportunity for innovation, engineering and design principles, and stewardship within the context of cross-curricular, authentic problem-based learning units.

My Project

Student can run behind in their day just like us adults but most of the time it is out of their control. Many of my parents are dropping children off in multiple locations. Students also have their share of morning chaos with bus routes, attention issues, and the days events ahead of them, many kids just don't think to eat until it’s too late.

I am trying to establish a mini pantry for my scholars that will serve as a one stop shop for a quick refuel and a weekly incentive.

These snacks would be accessible to students that have missed breakfast and are having a hard time focusing. I have selected Nutri-Grain Cereal Bars, Honey Graham Crackers, Nature Valley Chewy Trail Mix Granola Bars, and juice boxes to help with the morning hunger. There are also snacks that can be earned as incentive rewards as well. I have selected chips, crackers, fruit snacks, and cookies for that. The skittles and the Kisses will be given to those students who thinks outside the box and reach their daily and weekly goals.

No one learns when their stomach is calling, these kids deserve access to something that can help their brains focus on the material on the board and not on the food missing in their bellies. I am told by kids all day that they are getting multiple drinks of water between breakfast and lunch just so they can get that feeling out of their stomachs. I believe that though this may not eliminate the problem, it surely is a great start to overcoming it.
