My students need healthy snacks in order to reach their full potential as learners and alleviate the feeling of hunger that too many of them experience daily.
My third grade classroom welcomes students with every conceivable learning and socioeconomic background, as I am an inclusive classroom that provides an education to extremely diverse learners. My students include special needs students who have previously left the classroom to receive special education support, but now are included in ALL facets of a busy third grade learning environment. I also have students who excel and are considered high ability in their learning. While teaching such a diverse classroom is often a challenge, it has made me a better teacher.
Having an inclusive classroom has taught my students essential life skills such as patience, tolerance, kindness, stewardship, and peer mentoring.
My students come in each day, not only ready to learn how to read, write, and do arithmetic, but also how to become better people.
My Project
Being at an almost 80% poverty level, my learners have unique needs that too many children experience in classrooms. They are hungry.
It is difficult to concentrate, learn, and retain what is being taught when your belly is empty.
The healthy snacks that will be provided from this project will help to provide the fuel and energy these kids need to grow both physically and academically. They will snack while they enjoy reading and completing project based learning activities.
Supplementing our lunch program with a healthy snack of crackers, granola, fruit snacks, air popped popcorn, or peanut butter crackers will allow my students one less worry while in my care. I will know at the end of the day that they are leaving me with both more knowledge AND a belly that has been fed.
