Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 4th grade at a rural k-6 school. Most of our students are English Language Learners and are living below the poverty level. In fact, 100% of our school district students qualify for free lunch. Since most of my students live in a high poverty area many of my students` parents can not afford to buy their children reading books and therefore do not have appropriate reading materials in their homes.
Despite their limited resources at home my students are excited to attend school, and enthusiastically strive to improve their reading.
These children are wonderful and appreciative of the little things in life. They really want to improve their reading levels and will work hard to do so when given the opportunity.
Please consider helping my students by supplementing our class library, especially for the below level readers, as it will ultimately help children to achieve more in class. These kids are so deserving and eager to learn!
My Project
Some students do not yet read on grade level. In order to bring their reading skills up to grade level they need to start where they are currently reading and build upon those skills. So a student in fourth grade who reads at first grade level needs high interest books to build those skills up to second grade level and so on. My class library consists of books on all grade levels, but the students have read all of them in their independent reading levels. So I am looking to buy additional books that go with Accelerated Reader program. The way this works is that students choose books at their level from the class library, read them, and then take a test over that book on the computer. It is highly motivating for them to pass each test and receive prizes once they get so many points. With so few below level book choices, the students have exhausted the current class library. So with this project I would buy additional books to engage the lower level readers in particular so that they reach the next level and become life long readers.
