I am a first year teacher of 22 wonderful second graders. My students are from a rural midwest community. About 40% of students are from low income families and approximately about 20% are special education students. We are proud to be a trauma sensitive school to best meet the needs of our school's population.
When asking my students their favorite time of the day, the overwhelming response was reading time!
They look forward to finding a cozy spot to dive into books that interest them. Second graders are transitional readers who are no longer decoding short texts with a simple plot, but independently reading and enjoying books they are interested in. They realize, they are readers! We are now working on selecting a variety of texts to try out new genres and authors. My hope is to keep them hooked!
My Project
The books I have selected are series requested by second graders at my elementary school. Series allow students to continue following the journey of a character through many stories. It is a great way to keep students reading book after book. It is amazing how quickly a series can spread around a classroom. Before long, half the class is loving the same character! This allows my students to find commonalities with one another and have conversations about the books they are reading. I also selected some graphic novels as they are a favorite amongst young readers! I have especially noticed how they have hooked some of my reluctant readers.
I am excited to get these books into the hands of my students.
