I teach in a culturally diverse Title One school where ninety-five percent of the students are socioeconomically disadvantaged. Many of them have struggled academically. Most are English Language Learners who are learning to speak English alongside their academic learning. Even getting to school can be a challenge with early pickups and long bus rides required to get to school on time. My students work hard everyday to overcome the challenges that they face. This is especially true since the Sonoma fires ripped through our community in October of 2017. We are still feeling the impact of the fires that changed our community. Recently my students have been emotionally impacted by the smoke from the recent Northern California fires, as it brought back all of their feelings from last year.
My students come to school actively excited everyday; they love to learn and explore.
They are avid readers who are constantly pushing themselves to read more. I often have to ask them to put their books away when we are working on other things as they keep sneaking them out to read more. When independent reading time ends there is almost always groans and requests for more time to read.
This year I challenged my students to read 40 books. So far my students have read an average of 8 books each. Most of my students are reluctant readers who struggle to stick with reading. Getting and keeping them engaged with books requires a diverse selection of high interest books. My classroom library is fairly large but I need books to fit the interests of all of the sixth grade students at all of their different levels of reading.
Many of our classroom library's most popular books are falling apart due to high use.
This project will help me restock our classroom library with new high interest books as well as replacing some classroom favorites that are showing their age.
