This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Despite their disabilities, my students come in each day eager to learn. We are learning in a Title I school in Washington, D.C. We are one of the forty lowest performing schools in the city with nearly 99% of students coming from low income families and receiving free lunch. We are deemed "high Priority" and due to under funding are in extreme need of materials.
As students with disabilities, my students struggle to access the general education curriculum and require intensive, multi-sensory small group interventions in math and reading.
This requires me to have a variety of materials on hand daily. I need to provide my students with the individualized tools they need to learn, explore, and succeed in school!
My Project
My students come to school everyday despite the challenges they face at home. We all have basic needs that must be met in order for us to get through our day. All my students receive free lunch at school and by the end of the day are hungry.
Many of my students go home daily to an empty pantry, help me send them home with a snack!
At the end of a long day, my students are tired and hungry and need a snack to take home. How can they thrive when their basic needs are not met?
These snacks will help make our learning environment more productive as the students will not be worried about hunger and can focus on instruction!
