This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Remember how excited you would get/still get on Fridays knowing the weekend is coming up? For my students, Fridays are a cause of fear. At school, they know that they have breakfast and lunch, at home, they aren't sure.
My students attend a Title 1 school where all of the students receive free breakfast and lunch.
We have had backpack food programs (food sent home on the weekends) in the past but we are waiting to be put back in the program. The waiting means that my students don't receive food to take home on the weekends.
My Project
I'm requesting a variety of snacks for my students to take home on the weekends. Many of my students were part of the backpack food program and now that we aren't receiving the food, my students are suffering. These snacks will also be used in class since our lunch is later in the day and most of my kids say their stomachs hurt because they're hungry before lunch.
Donations to this project will help make a difference in my students' lives.
It will help them focus on their work in class instead of feeling sick from being hungry and it will help them not be so worried about not eating on the weekends. A bag of crackers sounds like a small thing, but when you don't have much at home, it goes a long way.
